A Partnership for Safety / Una collaborazione per la sicurezza del volo
As the President and the CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation I am honored to work with the Fondazione 8 ottobre 2001 to promote aviation safety around the world. The Flight Safety Foundation is an independent organization dedicated to the promotion of aviation safety. Flight Safety Foundation was founded in 1947, and has been involved in countless aviation safety issues around the world ever since. During all of that time we have worked with various organizations around the world, but we have never found an organization more dedicated to flight safety than the Fondazione 8 ottobre 2001.
Many people wonder why we work so hard to improve aviation safety when aviation is already one of the safest industries in the world. The simple truth is that aviation is safe because we make it that way. Every day we must look for emerging problems and eliminate them before small problems grow into major tragedies. This work is endless. New methods of data analysis have to be developed. New risk-reduction strategies have to be implemented, and the dedicated professionals who make the system safe must be supported. This is difficult work, and we are glad that we do not have to do it alone.
Through hard work, the aviation industry has cut the accident rate in half during the last decade. That is a great accomplishment but there is little opportunity to celebrate. If we look closely at the statistics we see a disturbing fact. The improvements have been realized on the first half of the decade. Almost no improvement has been realized during the past 5 years.
We have to ask ourselves, "Is this the beginning of a downturn in safety?" Have all the improvements already been realized, and as traffic increases, are we destined to see more accidents every week? We can be proud of what we have done, but now is not the time to rest.
Through our new partnership with the Fondazione 8 ottobre 2001, we will be hosting an important seminar addressing these issues. It will be the Flight Safety Foundation's 63rd annual safety seminar, and it will be held in Milan on 1-3 November. I hope you will join us at this important seminar where the leading experts in aviation safety from around the world come together to share information and plan the way forward towards safety skies.

Nella mia qualità di Presidente ed Amministratore Delegato della Flight safety Foundation, sono onorato di lavorare con la Fondazione 8 ottobre per promuovere nel mondo la Sicurezza del Trasporto Aereo. La Flight Safety Foundation è una organizzazione indipendente dedita alla alla promozione della Sicurezza in campo aeronautico. La Flight Safety Foundation è stata fondata nel 1947, e, da allora, si è occupata de innumerevoli eventi riguardanti la Sicurezza del Volo in ogni parte del mondo. In tutti questi anni abbiamo lavorato con varie organizzazioni di tutto il mondo, ma non ne abbiamo mai trovata una maggiormente dedita alla Sicurezza del Volo della Fondazione 8 ottobre.
Molti si domandano perchè lavoriamo così duramente per migliorare la Sicurezza nell'Aviazione, quando il Trasporto Aereo è già la più sicura industria del mondo. La semplice verità, è che l'Aviazione è sicura perchè noi la rendiamo tale.
Ogni giorno dobbiamo cercare nuovi problemi, ed eliminarli, prima che anche i più piccoli possano trasformarsi in grandi tragedie. E' un lavoro senza fine. Nuove metodologie di analisi dati devono essere sviluppate. Nuove strategie di riduzione dei rischi devono essere attuate, ed occorre supportare i professionisti che si dedicano alla Sicurezza del Sistema. E' un lavoro difficile, e siamo lieti di non essere soli in questo compito.
Con un duro lavoro, l'industria Aeronautica ha ridotto di metà il tasso di incidenti degli ultimi 10 anni. E' un gran risultato, ma non dobbiamo esultare. Se leggiamo attentamente le statistiche,rileviamo un dato preoccupante. I miglioramenti si sono verificati nella prima metà del decennio. Negli ultimi 5 anni non ci sono stati miglioramenti.

Dobbiamo, percanto chiederci: "E' l'inizio di un decadimento dei livelli di Sicurezza del Volo?" Tutti i miglioramenti possibili si sono realizzati e, con l'aumento del traffico aereo, siamo destinati ad assistere ad un numero sempre maggiore di incidenti ogni settimana? Possiamo essere orgogliosi di quanto abbiamo realizzato, ma non è il momento di dormire sugli allori.
La collaborazione con la Fondazione 8 ottobre ci consentirà di ospitare un importante seminario riguardante questi temi. Sarà il 63° Seminario Annuale Internazionale sulla Sicurezza del Volo della Flight Safety Foundation, e si terrà a Milano dal 1 al 3 novembre 2010. Mi auguro che partecipiate con noi a questo importante Seminario, in cui i massimi esperti mondiali sulla Sicurezza del Volo si riuniranno per condividere informazioni e pianificare nuove strategie per avere cieli sempre più sicuri.
